Mac Apps for UNT Students

College isn’t all fun and UPC Events, although we wish it were. There are actual classes with actual work to be done. Don’t panic though, this list of Mac applications that can help supercharge your productivity and help made college easier for you and all UNT Students.

Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus
By being a UNT student you get the Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus software suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Messenger) for free. You also get 50 GB of storage shared with mailbox on OneDrive. You can keep all your documents, spreadsheets and presentations properly formatted and synced across the cloud so they are readily available for you when you need to present or share with a group member. Also there’s other obvious uses for this software, from class to your clubs, it’s a total necessity.

A large number of UNT classes use Blackboard. With this app, you’ll have quick access to your class syllabi, assignment due dates, and discussion boards. It’s great for quick reference, checking your grades, or responding to a post on the bus. The pop-up notifications also let you know when your professors are posting important information, like assignments and grades.

The UNT Math Lab is a fantastic resource for getting help with your homework, but it unfortunately isn’t available 24 hours a day. For when they are closed this app can scan your math problem and provide you not only with a solution, but the steps to get there.

Can’t hear the TVs in the Syndicate Lounge or on Denton’s famous Fry Street? It’s not a problem. Tunity is a free app that streams TV audio to your smartphone. Tunity allows you to instantly hear any muted TV right on your mobile device. So, now when you go out and wanna know what is going on while you’re eating, you can.

Yes, you probably already have this app, but cheaper is always better. With your e-mail address, you can same some money and enjoy a 50% student discount on Spotify’s premium service. $5 a month x 12 months= $60. That’s a lot of yearly savings, just for being a student.

Described as the Instagram for music, the app syncs with your Spotify and SoundCloud accounts and allows you to share your song of the moment.

Learning a foreign language for class or just for fun? DuoLingo is the app for you. Sharpen your second, or third, language skills for free. DuoLingo can also be used as a study tool for your language classes! It’s a great tool, no matter how you use it.

on’t want to carry around a set of 3 x 5 cards? Want be a little greener? Cram is the app for you. Cram allows you to create a digital set of flashcards. Prep for your exam by creating flashcards customised to your class.

Save Money at UNT Pocket Points
Need to break yourself of the habit of fidgeting with your phone when you be focusing on classwork? Pocket Points is the app for you. Pocket Points incentives you by giving you rewards for not using your phone. Rewards are in the form of discounts to local businesses like Crooked Crust and Pita Pit.

Mint come from Intuit, the makers of TurboTax and QuickBooks, and is designed to help you keep track of spending and keep you on a budget. You can plug in all of your banks, investments, retirement funds, credit cards, and other financial accounts to quickly give you a complete picture of your financial health, or lack thereof. The retina screens on Macs are amazing! Studies show however that certain kings of light late a night can affect your sleep cycle. Remedy this with an app that mirrors sunlight for that particular time of day. Using f.lux might actually help you sleep better.

There are plenty of scanners available for free in UNT Computer labs around campus, but if don’t need something super high quality or just really fast, this free app is definitely an upgrade to taking a picture of it with your camera.

Creative Cloud
The Adobe is the industry standard. Whether you’re a CVAD student, RTV student, or just have a passion for design, the Creative Suite is for you. It’s the most expensive item on this list, but it’s much less expensive than paying the full retail price or taking a gamble and torrenting it. (Side Note: It’s not a good idea to torrent on campus.)

Calorie Counter & Diet Tracker by MyFitnessPal
Worried about the dreaded freshmen 15? The Pohl Recreation Center on campus is something you’re already paying for with your student fees whether you use it or not, but exercise if only half of the equation. This app can help you decide if you can really afford that 3rd cookie.

There is no Apple Store in Denton. Before, to get to one, you’ve had to make that long pilgrimage to Southlake, Dallas, Frisco, or Plano. That was pretty cumbersome. That problem has now been solved because The Mainframe is conveniently located right on campus and part of the #NewUNTUnion. That’s right, no more trips down 35 to get your favorite pieces of technology.

The Mainframe currently has all of the top selling models of laptops, iPads, desktops, and Beats headphones. Once it moves into the #NewUNTUnion, that selection will be upgraded to include a huge selection of accessories for all of your devices. With great prices and a great location, in conjunction with all of the other great services and programs on campus, you almost never have to leave Denton again.

The Mainframe staff receives the same training as other Apple employees. The staff is knowledgeable about the products and how they can best fit in your lifestyle. Stop by and ask which device is best for you. Plus, when The Mainframe moves into the #NewUNTUnion space, it’ll add certified technicians in the near future available to diagnose and fix any problems with your computers.

Since The Mainframe is not a third party entity, they aren’t on campus to make money off students. The Mainframe is an entity of the University Union and by purchasing from them, the Union can reinvest that money into YOU, the students. Revenue is put back into programming and service efforts provided to you students at the Union. After all, our #1 priority is to do our best to serve you and help you have the best experience at UNT.
